How do I get rid of forever chemicals in my home?

The news has recently been inundated with what are called “forever chemicals.” These chemicals have been found in various public water supplies, including wells and springs. These chemicals are known to cause cancer and other numerous other negative health effects that people would want to avoid. In this blog we’ll look at where these chemicals are coming from, how they can be tested for and the most cost effective method for ensuring they are not in your drinking or cooking water.

Forever chemicals, sometimes known as PFAS, are man made substances from various industrial and manufacturing processes that last a very long time and have been released into the environment. They get into and stay in water supplies, soil, meat from animals that have been exposed and even the air. When humans come in contact with these substances they can be ingested by mouth and small quantities can be absorbed through the skin.

The first line of devense is always education and awareness, which is probably why you are reading this blog. Reduce your contact with these chemicals. Check with your local county environmental department to see if there are any reports of forever chemical in your vicinity. Ensure your food is of the best quality you can afford. If you suspect or are concerned that your soil or water is contaminated, you can have them tested.

Testing your water on a continual basis for something that may or may not be there can be expensive and time consuming over time. Is there some affordable way for the average homeowner to ensure the water they drink and cook with does not contain these harmful chemicals that are being found in more and more water supplies? Fortunately they answer is YES!

There are several solutions that work quite well. A whole house carbon filter (check out the link above on the right) can help reduce these forever chemicals in the whole house. Another solution is an under-sink Reverse Osmosis filter. These often come with a carbon prefilter. This multiple barrier technique will ensure an even higher quality of water than the carbon filter alone. Reverse Osmosis can operate as a second barrier that removes even more contaminates from your drinking water. Check out the links to the right for several NSF rated Undersink RO systems.

Whatever filter you choose to install, it will only be effective if installed and maintained correctly, so read the instructions and change the cartridges/media as instructed.
